The Aygo is the default answer when someone wants a first car or a cheap second car, and it earns that. One litre, three cylinders, and light enough that it never feels slow anywhere you would actually drive it. It parks in the spaces everyone else drives past. And it is a Toyota, which means the things that usually go wrong on a cheap hatchback tend not to.

Inside it is better equipped than the price suggests. The steering wheel is leather-trimmed with audio and phone controls on the spokes, so it takes calls without you touching the handset. Air conditioning, a centre display, and two-tone cloth that stops the cabin feeling like a base model.

As a 2017 petrol it is ULEZ compliant, so it goes into the zone without paying the daily charge.
